The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is working on new political equations and messaging strategies in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The upcoming Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections have become an important part of the party’s preparations, with discussions reportedly focusing on candidates who can address regional and social representation.
The Election Commission has scheduled elections for 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh on October 16, 2026. Eight of the 10 seats are currently held by BJP members, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) hold one each.
Varun Gandhi’s Name Draws Attention
Former BJP MP Varun Gandhi is among the names being discussed in political circles as the party considers its candidates for the Upper House. However, there has been no official announcement that Gandhi will be nominated to the Rajya Sabha or inducted into the Union Cabinet.
Gandhi has previously served as a BJP national vice-president and represented Sultanpur in 2009 and Pilibhit in 2019. He was not given a ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, while his mother Maneka Gandhi contested from Sultanpur but also lost the election.
Speculation about Gandhi’s political future increased after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi with his family in March 2026. Following the meeting, Gandhi publicly referred to receiving affection, blessings and guidance from Modi.
The meeting prompted political discussion about whether relations between Gandhi and the BJP leadership could improve, although the party has not officially confirmed any new political role for him.
BJP Reviewing Several Names
According to recent reports, the BJP is examining both existing and new faces for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The selection process is also being viewed through regional and caste representation ahead of the 2027 Assembly election. India Today reported that the party is considering at least four new candidates while also deciding which outgoing MPs could be renominated.
Former BJP national office-bearer Anil Jain, who served as a Rajya Sabha member from 2018 to 2024, is also among the names reportedly being discussed.
Several other senior leaders are also being mentioned in connection with the selection process.
Focus on Jat Representation
For western Uttar Pradesh, former Union ministers Satyapal Singh and Sanjeev Balyan are reportedly among the names being considered, particularly in the context of the BJP’s outreach among Jat voters.
Brahmin Representation
For Brahmin representation, reports have mentioned BJP national general secretary Harish Dwivedi and Mathura MLA Shrikant Sharma, who is also the party’s in-charge for Himachal Pradesh.
OBC Representation
Union Minister BL Verma, who belongs to the Lodh community, is among the outgoing BJP Rajya Sabha members whose future is being discussed. BJP OBC Morcha state president Prakash Pal is also reportedly among the names under consideration.
Scheduled Caste Representation
For Scheduled Caste representation, names reportedly being discussed include Jugal Kishore, former MP Vidya Sagar Sonkar and former state Morcha president Ram Chandra Kanaujia, among others.
What Is the Rajya Sabha Election Equation in UP?
The electoral college for the Rajya Sabha election consists of elected members of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Based on the present numbers, the BJP-led alliance has a strong position in the upcoming contest.
Recent analyses differ slightly on the exact distribution, particularly regarding the eighth seat. India Today reported that the BJP is expected to secure eight seats, while other analyses say the BJP has seven seats comfortably within reach and that the eighth seat could depend on additional support and political developments.
The situation is particularly significant for the BSP. Its sole Rajya Sabha member, Ramji Lal Gautam, is completing his term, while the party currently has no MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
October Elections Will Set the Stage for 2027
The Rajya Sabha election will be followed by elections to 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats, for which polling is scheduled for October 23. The Election Commission has announced the nomination process for both contests.
For the BJP, the candidate selection is therefore not only about filling Upper House vacancies. The choices are also being watched as an indication of how the party is approaching regional representation and social equations before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
For now, Varun Gandhi’s possible return to a prominent BJP role remains speculation rather than a confirmed decision. The final list of Rajya Sabha candidates will provide a clearer picture of the party’s strategy.
